Mexican Train Domino game
Mexican Train is a well-known variation of dominoes typically played with a double-twelve set of tiles. The game can be played with two to eight players, and the objective is to be the first to get rid of all your dominoes and score fewer points.

The game begins with the player who has the 12-12 tile, who starts the first round by placing it in the center of the table. The second round is then started by the 11-11 tile, and this process continues downwards to the double blank for the 13th round.

Playing

The game is played in turns, starting with the player who placed the starting double tile, and continuing in clockwise order around the table. Each player then begins to build a train, which is a single row of dominoes starting from the double in the center and extending towards the player.

In the first turn, players may play as many dominoes as they wish, so long as they form a valid train. After the first turn, each player must play only one domino on their train during their turn. If a player cannot make a valid play, they must draw a domino from the boneyard, which is a pool of unplayed dominoes placed face down on the table.

When a player is unable to play on their train, it becomes an open train, which means that any other player can add tiles to it. This train will stay open until the first player is able to add a domino to it.

If a player with an open train plays on another player’s open train, their own train will remain open. It is only closed when the player who owns the train plays on it.

Public and Private trains

In Mexican Train, there are two types of trains that players can play on: public (open) trains and private (closed) trains. A public train is a train that any player can play on during the game, whereas a private train belongs to a specific player and can only be played on by that player.

In general, public trains are more accessible and offer players more opportunities to make a play. Private trains, on the other hand, provide players with a sense of control and security, as other players cannot play on their train as long as it stays closed. Ultimately, the decision to play on a public or private train depends on the player’s strategy and the tiles they have in their hand.

The Mexican Train

The Mexican Train is a special train that any player can play on at any time during the game. To start the Mexican Train, a player needs to place a matching domino onto the middle double domino. It is important to note that only one Mexican Train can be started in each round, but any player can play on it.

Once a player has played on the Mexican Train, any other player can also play on the train during their turn, as long as they follow the rules of the game. The Mexican Train can only be played on by one player at a time.

Scoring

At the end of each round, players score the number of pips on the tiles they haven’t played. The winner of the round is the player who played all their tiles first, and they receive zero points for that round. The other players score the total number of pips left on their remaining tiles.

The game continues until one player reaches a predetermined number of points, usually 100. The player with the lowest score at the end of the game is the overall winner.
